Groundwork

The thinking
before the build.

Strategy and design, together. Before the project starts.

Sometimes the problem is not "we need a new site." It is "we do not know what we are actually saying, and we need help figuring that out before we build anything." Groundwork is for that. Three ways to work with us when you need the thinking first.

Is this for you
Four situations where we get the call.

Not every project needs this. Most do not. But if you are reading one of these and thinking "yes, that is us," Groundwork is probably the right shape.

01
You have grown past how your business looks on the outside.

The business you are running today is not the business your website, brand, or materials describe. You know it. Your customers sometimes notice. You need a read on what the business actually is now, and the work to match it.

02
Your offer is sophisticated and your materials cannot carry it.

What you actually do is complicated, valuable, or both. Your deck, your site, or your pitch keeps flattening it. People either do not understand, or they understand but do not feel the weight. The thinking has to come before the design.

03
You are raising, pitching, or selling and the deck has to land.

There is a specific meeting, a specific investor, a specific close. The materials you have now will not do it. You need someone who can figure out what the pitch actually is, then build the deck, site, and narrative that win the room.

04
You know you need a rebrand. You are not sure into what.

You have outgrown the current brand. You have tried to write the brief yourself. It keeps coming out wrong because the question underneath has not been answered. The answer is the job.

Three ways to work
The Audit.
The Engagement.
The Deep Work.

Three shapes, depending on what you need. Most people start with The Audit. Some skip straight to The Engagement. A small number work with us ongoing through The Deep Work. Pick what fits.

Option 01
The
Audit
We figure out what is actually going on.
Timeline1.5–2 weeks
Investment$15,000
FormatFixed fee
DeliverableWritten report
What you get

We spend just under two weeks on your business. We read your materials, talk to you, look at your market, and write up what we find. At the end, you get a real document. Not a brief. Not a pitch. A clear, honest read of what is working, what is not, and what we would do about it.

Most people start here. The Audit is the fastest way to find out if we are a fit for each other, and it stands alone even if you do not work with us after.

How it goes
Days 1–3Two or three calls. We ask the real questions. You show us everything.
Days 4–8We go heads down. Figure out what is going on, not just what you told us.
Days 9–12We write it up properly and walk you through it. Yours to keep either way.
What you walk away with
Language for what you could not quite articulate. A clear read on what to do next. If that means working with us, great. If it means doing it yourself or hiring someone else, also great. Either way, you are not starting from zero anymore.
Option 02
The
Engagement
We figure it out, then we build it.
Timeline6–8 weeks
InvestmentStarting at $50,000
FormatFixed fee or monthly
DeliverableDepends on the problem
What you get

Six to eight weeks. We work out what the real story is, then build the things that carry it. A repositioning. A brand rebuild. An investor narrative plus the deck and site to match. A launch of a new offer. Whatever the situation actually needs.

The work starts with the thinking, not the design. We do not jump to deliverables. By the end, you have both the strategy and the materials that make it land.

How it goes
Weeks 1–2Strategy. We figure out what you are actually saying, to whom, and why now.
Weeks 3–6Build. The deck, the site, the brand, the pitch. Whatever the work is.
Weeks 7–8Refinement and launch. Everything leaves ready to use.
What you walk away with
The thing you hired us to build, plus the thinking that makes it work. A rebrand that actually matches who you are now. A raise deck that lands. A site that reads the way the business actually operates. The strategic work and the design work, done together instead of in sequence.
Option 03
The Deep
Work
We are in it with you the whole time.
Term6 months minimum
InvestmentFrom $25,000 / month
CadenceOngoing
FitBy referral or after working together
What you get

An ongoing relationship. We are inside the real conversations about where the business is going, and we produce the materials that come out of those conversations as they come up. Think of it as having a strategy partner and a design team on call, both in one.

This is for people who are moving fast and need both thinking and execution to keep up. New markets, new offers, new stakes landing every few weeks. Not a retainer. A seat at the table.

How it goes
OngoingBiweekly strategy sessions. Direct access in between.
As neededWe build whatever the month actually calls for. Decks, sites, narratives, investor comms.
QuarterlyWe zoom out. Review where you are, what is next, what needs to change.
What you walk away with
Strategy and materials stop being separate problems. You have a partner who already understands the business, so every deck, every site update, every pitch lands right the first time. Decisions get made faster because the thinking and the building happen in the same room.
Not every project needs this
Most people should start with the studio.

Most projects do not need Groundwork. If you know what you want built and you just need the right team to build it, the studio is the right call. A website, a brand, a deck, a launch. Fixed scope, fixed price, done in weeks.

Groundwork is for the other kind of project. The one where the thinking is the hard part and the design cannot happen until the thinking is done. If that sounds like you, this is the page. If not, go check out the studio instead.

Before you ask
Groundwork questions.
How is this different from a branding project?
A branding project is design work. You tell us what you want built, we build it. Groundwork is different. We start by figuring out what you are actually trying to say, then build the thing that says it. The thinking is part of the job, not something you bring to the table.
Do I need to be a funded startup or big company to do this?
No. Groundwork is about the shape of the problem, not the size of the company. We have clients raising $50M and clients running bootstrapped businesses doing $2M. The question is whether strategy and design both need to get solved in the same engagement. If yes, this works.
How do most engagements start?
With The Audit. Three weeks, fixed fee, you get a written report either way. Most people start here because it is the lowest-risk way to figure out if we are a fit. If it makes sense to keep working together, we do. If not, you walk away with the report and a clearer head.
Who actually does the work?
The two founders. Every Audit. Every Project. Every month of The Deep Work. We do not subcontract this work or hand it off to juniors. It would not be this if we did.
Can we see case studies?
Our studio work is on the Work page. It shows the quality of what we build. Groundwork engagements under this model are newer, and we document them with clients on a case-by-case basis. If you want to see specific examples of the thinking, ask on the first call and we will share what we can.
Can I start smaller than $15,000?
Yes. The studio runs fixed-price projects starting at $3,500 on the Essentials page, and custom work through the Projects page. If you want to work with us but Groundwork is more than you need right now, start there.
How do I know if Groundwork is wrong for me?
If you already know exactly what you want built, Groundwork is probably overkill. The studio is faster, cheaper, and the right tool. Groundwork is for when the answer is not obvious and figuring out the answer is the hard part.

If the fit is right, the first step is usually The Audit. We will tell you honestly if it is not right.
